In Delhi, the River Yamuna receives water released upstream at Palla. Several storm water drains which are fed by a network of smaller drains also outfall into the river. As Delhi’s population grows each year,
rampant pollution has hampered numerous efforts to transform the river into a wholesome water body. This website describes what is at stake and measures that are underway to rejuvenate the river.
The utilisation of sewage treatment capacity is only 75%. More than 45 % of the city’s sewage is not treated and is collected from pit latrines and dumped into drains. A project to trap the sewage through interceptors and convey it to the Sewage Treatment Plants is under execution. However, the STPs will need 2 years or more to be commissioned. The Government has notified “Delhi Water Board Septage Management Regulations 2018” which will require the registration of the Tractor/ Trolleys collecting the septage and making its discharge only into designated sewage pumping stations or sewage treatment plants mandatory. Advertisements for registration of vehicles have issued and the key players in the organisations as well as the District Magistrates who have been given co-ordinating responsibility have been sensitised.
